KRISTA'S representation of the Crags!

Krista, I am SO sorry. I was a little preoccupied with a little project that I totally neglected to post your photos! You shall, if you don't already, know soon what I was working on. Perhaps Saturday? Perhaps Tuesday. So, for everyone I shall share your photos...at least a few key pictures that I like a lot.

Heeere we goooo!

Rachel cooling tired feet the first night in the Selway.

The sunset the first night was incredible!

We are headed to THE VERY end of the road.

"The end of the road is only the end if you let it be. May the peaks and valleys quiet and renew your soul. Let there always be an adventure ahead and good friends to share it with."
T.E.

Headed up said road.

Canteen Creek. We CIRCLED this bastard in 12 or so miles. (Far ridge, we were in the valley behind that.)

Rachel at the first lunch stop.

Big Fog Lake at sunrise

Tom's cairn in a WAY too obvious spot. "Here's the lake if you didn't know it already!"

First camp in a frost pocket. GREAT photo.

Just so you know, we were "bear aware." The gals thought it was a good photo op.

On the way to Legend Lake! (By the way, this is a quintessential Idaho photo.)

It IS kind of a legend of a lake. I could have lived there.

Not sure if I was dancing or what. Happy to be at Legend anyways.

Rachel, walking on water? Happy to be there as well.

See Mom, I DO use a map....occasionally. "I make 'em, I don't necessarily USE them!"

Perfect view of Legend and the hike we did to get to the ridge. Again, much steeper than it looks here.

Not exactly sure where this is at. But this kind of thing happened a lot.

Looking down into the...ready for this? The southern-most lake of South Three Links Lake. ie: second camp.

Looking south from second camp the next morning. The "Lizard Fire" is over the ridge to the left down there about 5 miles, last reported at the time (and as I found out later the most active of the complex), at about 5000 acres.

Still raring to go the third day! Awesome hairdo!

Enjoying looking back over South Three Links Lakes on Jesse Pass.

It kinda died off after that with most of our photos. This is the point in the day when we were tired and drained...but still had miles and miles to go, plus brush, ascents and descents, and encounters with unseen (but known) fuzzy creatures.

I am continually amazed at the smiles I saw at every point in this trip. (We have photos to prove it...obviously.) Even tired, dazed, confused...we all managed to smile. It took some convincing for myself (via Rachel), but eventually, I saw the light and figured, "What is, is. We'll do it...and we'll deal with any potential consequences."

That is an interesting thing to think about. Essentially, that means, "I don't really care about what is going on out in the 'world' I care about what is here and who is with me right now."

Not something to take lightly.

LOVE IT.

Now what should you do after a backpacking trip like that? Run a FREAKING MARATHON of course!

So, after a couple grueling days in the woods, Rachel decided that it would be a good idea to run a marathon the Sunday following the trip. Alright, to each his/her own, but I only run when chased...and even then, I think I'd like to stand my ground a little bit more. ;P (My Dad likes to say, "if you're going to get in a fight, use a utensil." Also, "If someone wants to fight, tell them no three times, after that...send them to the hospital and make them cross the street when you walk down the road." As well as, "The only unfair fight is the one you lose." All ties together and I LOVE IT.)

So, running is sometimes out of the question.
But there are some crazy people out there who are in better running condition than I'll probably ever be. Rachel is one of them.

I am extremely impressed with her. She ran this at under a 11 minute mile, split was 2 hours(ish) and final was 4 hours and 44 minutes. Can you even imagine running 26.2 miles in that amount of time? Shoot. I'd be laying in a ditch at mile 12.

Truckin' up the hill

It looks tiring...

Finish at 4:44:09! (Our good friend Krista in the foreground.)

That probably doesn't hurt at all!

Case and point...

I heard the massage was nice

Interesting how hardship can bring people together

Rachel's representation of the Crags

This is going to be a little different. Since I have already written my story on the Crags, I have since received a CD of Rachel’s photos! I shall post my favorites here with captions (my own of course.) Once I get Krista’s photos, I shall do the same. Hopefully we’ll see more pictures of Tom. Always a strange experience to see myself in my element. Miss ya’ll. Thank you very much for the notes.

Yours truly tying on a fly for Selway fish

Love the composition of this. Zen anyone?

Selway at sunset.

So, the girls found a floating watermellon. Krista decided to free it into the wilds by pushing it into the current.

Amazing detail...despite not knowing what this flower is.

Big Fog Mtn. Trail lasts for a mile...fyi

Krista at the first lunch point.

Tom playing with Krista's weather machine (Kestrels are cool)

Funny bird for Rachel.

Cooking

I didn't make a mess! No...

Enjoying the morning view at Big Fog Lake
Saturday morning...why so pissed? (Who knows...just the look on my face at the time I guess)

At least KRISTA is happy! (Nice PJs)

Big Fog Lake

Packed and ready to go. Waiting in the shade.

Fires out west make it interesting

Krista arriving at Legend Lake

Tom at Legend Lake

Rachel's self-photo at Legend Lake

Tom on top of the buggy mountain

Rachel's photo of the steep descent is the BEST!

Tom and Krista coming down the chute.

Same as above

At least the flowers were pretty coming down the chute!

Tom and Krista playing Lewis and Clark at the upper lake of South Three Links Lakes

The crew at the upper lake

Smoke is just great for photos.

Happy and headed out on Sunday night?

Sunday night camp!

Now THIS is living!
That ends Tom's favorite of Rachel's photos. Neat to fill in some gaps like that!
